Colonia Güell is a small working colony located in the municipality of Santa Coloma de Cervelló (Barcelona), is considered a benchmark for studying the architecture of Antoni Gaudí and is also one of the most important modernist and attractive touristic sites of Catalonia.
Unlike the vast majority of industrial colonies of Catalonia, Eusebi Güell attempted to social improvements for workers and applied its status as patron of culture. Thus, endowed to the Colonia Güell cultural and religious facilities, and joined the modernist current new construction. Especially the church designed by Antoni Gaudí himself, unfinished but seating the foundations of what would become the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona.
Due to the rich heritage of the whole, in 1991 the Colònia Güell was declared Bien de interés Cultural and established protection for most of the important buildings, as well as the General characteristics of the building.
Take a look at the crypt, where the catalan architect Antoni Gaudí underwent many architectural solutions before building the Sagrada Familia (World Heritage, 2005).
