Museum of History of Barcelona

Next to the Plaça del Rei and the Palau Reial Major, in the heart of the Ciutat Vella Quarter, you can find the Museu d’Historia de la Ciutat (The City History Museum). The palace-like building in which this museum is located was originally built in the 1497… but in a different place! It was located on a piece of land close to it’s current location and was the house of a rich business man. In 1931 it was moved stone by stone to it’s current location because the government started to build a big avenue in that place (the Via Laietana Avenue).

Thanks to this move they discovered numerous archeologically interesting objects, ranging from the Roman city of Barcino from the century I BC until the medieval Barcelona from the thirteenth century.

This “Museu d’Historia de la Ciutat” opened first in 1943 along with another museum, the “Palau Reial Major”. If you take the big tour, you will find out how the people lived in the past: you can see a dry cleaner, a fish salting workshop or a winery facility. Also they expoe every-day-objects from that era, along with gold, jewelry, sculptures and games.
