From the first moment, "La Monumental" acquired a great prestige by the category of the posters that offered, being considered one of the three most prestigious squares of all Spain. From June 1977 it became the only bullring in Barcelona after the disappearance of the Plaza del Torín (founded in 1834 in Barceloneta Quarter) and Las Arenas (founded in 1900 in Eixample Quarter).

On July 28, 2010, the Parliament of Catalonia voted to abolish bullfighting in Catalonia. In recent years, "La Monumental", the only active bullring, was not able to fill half an entrance. It was the last place where bullfights were held.

Nowadays inside the square you can find the Barcelona Bullfighting Museum where you will find costumes of famous bullfighters, famous bull heads, historical documents and other objects related to bullfighting.
It has also been the scene of many musical events, among his most outstanding concerts was the one offered by The Beatles on July 3, 1965.
