The industrialist Manuel de Quadras i Feliu, Barón de Quadras, commissioned Josep Puig i Cadafalch a project to renovate an old rental house located on Avenida Diagonal.
The Palau Barón de Quadras is a modernist building, located halfway between Casa Milà and
Casa de les Punxes, on the
Right Eixample Quarter.
The building, cataloged as an Historical Artistic Monument of National Interest since 1976 is currently headquarters of the Ramon Llull Institute since 2013, being part of the network of
modernist buildings open to the public, under the management of Casas Singulares.
The first thing that strikes us is the existence of two facades, the main one (the one over Diagonal Avenue, the main one) and another on the back (over Rosellón Street). The reason is that the
original building only presented the back facade, being the space currently occupying the front of the Palace, the backyard of that first building.
The main façade, on the other hand, represents another of the great moments of the Catalan modernism. It does not go unnoticed a lush stand built in stone and covering much of the twelve meters
from the front of the building. In it we can assume a certain plateresque inspiration. In the interior the use of ceramics with some influence of the Islamic architecture is manifested.
