On a watchtower overlooking the harbor at 173m high, the Castle of Montjuïc observes the city with a formidable view. Today is a peaceful place, but the history of this fortress remains in the memory of Barcelona as a symbol of repression and also of the struggle of the city in various phases of history.
The summit of Montjuïc is an ideal enclave for the defense, since it has 360º of views on the territory. However, it was not until the War of the Reapers of the year 1640 that
the city built a military compound in the place where there was a watchtower. This first fortress became real property in 1652, becoming soon one of the main protagonists
of the War of Succession, between 1705 and 1714.
In the middle of the 18 century, the military engineer Juan Martin Cermeño will be in charge of the remodeling of the enclosure, badly damaged during the war. Its at this time when
the castle will take on the look it still has today. The city of Barcelona has been bombed from the castle at various times in its history, which has also had prison functions. Until
1960 the castle is maintained as a military prison and thereafter it is ceded to the city under the management of the land army. Three years later Franco inaugurated a museum of arms there.
Currently, since 2007, the Castle of Montjuïc is owned by the Barcelona City Hall and, therefore, of all Barcelona residents.
