Spain Square

The Plaça Espanya (Spain Square in English), is a square that was built for the Universal Exposition of 1929, is the gateway to the whole area of Montjuic in Barcelona. It has been designed by the architects Puig i Cadafalch and Guillem Busquets i Vautravers.

In the middle of this square, you can see the monumental fountain, by the design of Josep Maria Jujol. It is called the “Font dels Tres Mars” (“Fountain of the Three Seas” in Catalan) and symbolizes the 3 seas that surround Spain. In addition to that, there are 3 groups of sculptures that simulate 3 other important rivers of Spain: the Ebre, the Tajo and the Guadalquivir. The 3 bronze figures represent navigation, public health and abundance.

From Plaça Espanya you can see on one side the old bullring, converted into a shopping center. And on the other side you can see the enormous size of the mountain of Montjuic with the two towers of entry and the National Museum of Catalonian Art and the Magic Fountain as a backdrop.

In this immense circular square some of the most important streets of the city come together. As this square is also one of the access points to Barcelona, it is a true traffic nerve-center of the city.
