It is one of the centennial markets of the city (toghether with the Boquería Market, o el Princess Market), was born as an outdoor market, with a location in the San Miguel Square.
Of special nautical and fisherman character, it was inaugurated in 1884, work of Antoni Rovira i Trias.
The current building is the result of the renovation carried out between 2005 and 2007 by the city hall, following a project by Josep Miàs, right hand of the late Enric Miralles, author together
with Benedetta Tagliabue, of the Santa Caterina Market. The project
has preserved the characteristic original iron structure of the 1884 market.
Architecturally, the market attracts attention because the metal structure of the old original wrought iron of the time has been restored and modern and functional elements have been incorporated.
The remodeling was also used to install solar panels on the roof, which generate 40% of the market’s energy coverage.
