The Amatller House is next to the Batlló House (Antoni Gaudí) and the Lleó i Morera House (Domènech i Montaner), all them located on the Paseo de Gracia and they are part of the “manzana de la discordia” ("block of discord" in English).
The original building was a work of Antoni Robert, built in 1875, and started to be renovated in 1898. The renovation of this amazing building is the work of the famous modernist
architect Puig i Cadafalch, a contemporary of Antoni Gaudí, which combines the modernism with the neo-gothic style, inspired in houses in the Netherlands.
The architect worked with some artists and craftsmen in Barcelona of the modernist time, headed by the sculptors Eusebi Arnau and Alfons Jujol.
The architect based his design on the typical Catalan mansion and incorporated Germanic elements. The Casa Amatller the basic layout is the typical urban gothic, ceramic tiles.
You can visit the office, which has survived and contains one of the finest stained-glass windows of the modernist era. The Casa Amatller is currently offering guided visits.
