It was built between 1900 and 1905 on behalf of the textile industrialist Francesc Burés i Borràs. Tradition in the Barcelona area was that all the textile entrepreneurs wanted to have their homes and offices: Examples are Calvet House, Felip House, Cotton House, etc).
Being created by Francesc Berenguer i Mestres, the Burés House was an example of architectural modernity. Pioneering techniques were used in this building, inspired by ways of working
and building from all over the world (including Japan!).
There are two spaces that draw our special attention: the “Hansel and Gretel” room: A space conceived as a game-room, fully decorated with references to children's
stories of Germanic origin. And secondly the chapel next to the entrance with a whole wall of floral themed stained glass windows leading to the main staircase.
For years the building was in disuse and mistreated: A tragic example was the gold-leaf roofs that were covered with multiple layers of paint. Or sculptures, with some pieces torn
off and others simply missing.
The house used to be a filming set for many movies, commercials and series. The best known is the movie Darkness, from which all the interiors in this house were used.
The most curious and innovative thing about this building is it was one of the first buildings to have an electric elevator in Barcelona.
The building has been converted into 26 luxury homes, only a few happy people have the pleasure of living in this modernist palace.
