This work of Catalan modernism is located in the Right Eixample Quarter of Barcelona. Macaya House is also known as Palau Macaya (Macaya Palace in English) and is one of the most important Catalan architects of the time, Josep Puig i Cadalfach.
Its name “Macaya” comes from its first owner, Romà Macaya i Gibert, who, taking advantage of the rise of Catalan Modernism, commissioned Puig i Cadalfach to build it. The Macaya House
is a stately building, the façade is distinguished by the white color, with graffito in ocher made by Joan Paradís. Despite the austerity of the façade, the balcony of the main floor,
the windows and a small grandstand have great ornamentation of carved stone.
On the capital of the left side of the main entrance of the house you can see the figure of a cyclist; it is a detail of the sculptor towards Puig i Cadafalch since the architect
was also building Amatller House and used his bicycle to move between
his two works.
At the end of the Civil War, the building was acquired by La Caixa. It is currently the Cultural Center of the la Caixa Foundation.
