Is one of the largest market in Barcelona, even bigger than Boqueria’s
market and without tourists.
In its origen it was an open-air market located south of the roman walls of Barcelona,
at the San Antonio portal.
Its location was perfect to trade due it was a zone of passage for those who came out or arrived. With the expansion of the city of Barcelona (the construction of the Eixample District and the demolition of the roman walls, Ildefons
Cerdà proposed the construction of a fixed structure to guarantee the permanence of the market.
The San Antonio Market is a huge building made of steel that occupies a complete block, it was designed by Antoni Rovira i Trias in 1882. The success of the market was so
great that the textile merchants of the area decided to settle in the surroundings. This is how the "Encantos" of San Antonio Market was born.
