Woman and Bird (in Catalan: Dona i Ocell), the work of the artist Joan Miró, was one of his last large sculptures that he realized. Inaugurated in 1983, this work is one of the first public art expressions of Barcelona in its new democratic stage.
This sculpture is 22 meters high and made in concrete and ceramic mosaic in red, blue, green and yellow, and placed according to the trencadís technique (as in
the Güell Park).
Over the years it has received multiple interpretations, like
for instance: A woman with a hat with a bird on it. The author’s will to connect the roots of the land with the free flight of a bird. An evidently phallic sculpture, and a large etceteras.
The truth is that Joan Miró linked the monument with the habbit from ancient Rome to place a phallus-stature at the gates of the cities, to wish health and strength to those who arrived.
The work is exposed in the Joan Miró's Park, at only 5 minutes walking from Espanya Square
and Montjuïc Park.
