This hill, located just next to the medieval city, has always been a strategic place to defend -and control- the city of Barcelona. The name probably comes from “Montjuich” which
derives from “Mount of the Jews”, and thanks to documents and archaeological works it has been confirmed that there was indeed a
Jewish cemetery.
At the top of the hill they built in 1751 the castle, which during the
dictatorship served as a prison and also where the opponents of the regime were shot, and buried in the
cemetery on the southwest side of the mountain.
Over the years, the mountain lost that lugubrious spirit of its history. In 1929 it became part of the International Exhibition of Barcelona, which helped to converted all
this hill in an urbanized space with pavilions on both sides of a wide street to the Spain
Square. Today many congresses and trade shows are celebrated there.
During the same period the Spanish Village was built to show the visitors the typical Spanish street-life and also the precious
Mies van de Rohe Pavilion was built for the same
International Exhibition of Barcelona. Finally, impossible to forget, the most magnificent work of all: the
Great Magic Fountain, which continues to delight us today with its music,
lights and water show.
Years later, the transformation of Montjuïc ended with the works for the Olympic Games of Barcelona 1992, with different areas for the sport as it shows
the Olympic Ring, right next to the
Telecommunications Tower designed by the
famous Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.
This mountain also offers a wide range of cultural options such as the
Joan Miró's Foundation, the
Museum of Archeology of Catalonia, the
Ethnological Museum of Barcelona or the
National Museum of Art of Catalonia.
And as if everything was not enough, the Montjuïc Park offers you the Mayor Lookout
with the best views you can imagine, the Joan Maragall's Gardens,
the Botanical Garden,
the Mossén Costa i Llobera Garden,
the Laribal Garden, and so much green space, which you will
understand because it is called the green lung of the city!
