As we saw on other blog-posts, Barcelona is full of surprises. One of them is the narrowest street in the city: the Carrer de les Mosques (Flies Street in English) in the Born Quarter.
This street less than 1 meter wide, is located just where the exclusive Montacada
Street, with its great palaces and its rich inhabitants starts.
On this area, there were several warehouses where the excess merchandise of the Santa
Caterina Market and El Born Market was kept. Being so narrow, it was impossible
to vent these warehouses and that resulted that the street was full of flies continuously.
But flies were not the only thing that hid in this street: The big carassa (in this case
the famous "Papamoscas") give you some info about what happened here. It was the place of the busiest brothel in the city! There is even a Catalan saying that pays homage to
this street: “al carrer de les mosques hi ha funció a les fosques”, that in English would be something like this: “in the street of the flies there is a function at night”
