The origin of the Concepción Market, goes hand by hand with the origin of the Right Eixample Quarter, neighborhood where this market is located.
In 1871, it was moved stone by stone to the actual place the Gothic Church of the
Concepción. In 1884 the City Council bought all areas of the block next door, this action was motivated by the need to locate here a market, due this area were the most
populated area around this new district. The area that today we known as the Right
Eixample, was in those early days, the neighborhood of the bourgeoisie, who introduced its own style houses: Modernism.
The project was a work of Antoni Rovira i Trias, the same author of San Antonio
Market. It was inagurated in 1888. The estructure of the building is a beautifull industry style and glass. It’s simple, but beautifull for its simplicity. In addition, the
original roof is preserved, with flat colored tiles. The Mercat de la Concepció take its name from the Concepción Church.
