Here they exhibit more than 500 pieces, a total of 1700 instruments, which makes it one of the most important collections in Spain. The mission of the museum is to show that musical instruments are living material from our past. Currently the museum is under the direction of the Barcelona City Council.

The project of a large space dedicated to music in Barcelona dates back to the late 1980s, in the context of the reordering and promotion of cultural facilities in the pre-Olympic newspaper. Rafael Moneo was the architect in charge of designing an auditorium for the city. In March 2007, on the second floor of the Barcelona Auditorium, the Museum was inaugurated.

With the inauguration of the Music Museum, the project of the Auditorium Music City was concluded in Barcelona, given that the same building has its headquarters, in addition to the museum, the Symphony Orchestra of Barcelona and the National of Catalonia and the Higher School of Music of Catalonia.
