In 1892, the town of les Corts, which today is part of the Left Eixample Quarter of Barcelona, decided to build its Market. Inaugurated 2 years later, the market was named “El Porvenir”, due to the fact that it was the first and only market in this town and located in an area that was believed to be prosperous, even though it was an open-air market.
Today, the market is known as “Mercado del Ninot” (“Doll Market” in English).
It received this name from a very popular
tavern that sold a good wine at a very cheap price because it was located outside the Barcelona city walls and did not have to pay the access fees to Barcelona.
The daughter of the tavern, on a visit to Barcelona, saw how a boat caught fire, and asked her boyfriend, save the doll that was in the bow of this boat. The brave boyfriend
obviously saved the doll and placed it on the facade of the popular tavern…. That’s how this area was started to be called “the Ninot” and later it spread the
name to the Market.
Nowadays, you can still see the doll as it is exhibited in the Maritim Reial Drassanes Museum de Barcelona.
Later, in 1933, a big remodeling of the market made the structure that we know today.
