In the heart of the San Antonio quarter, you can find an incredibly special modernist building: The House of the Snails.
Wherever you look, you will find hundreds of snails crawling up its facade. Bigger ones, smaller ones, on the railings, on the balconies, on the cornices, everywhere! And
if you pay attention to the top of the building, you will see peasant figures collecting these snails.
The snail has the meaning of perpetual regeneration. In many countries they are considered lucky animals ... although in this case, the reason for so many snails in the
building is much simpler: it is a tribute, a sign of appreciation.
The legend is amazing! Many years ago, this area was nothing more than an area of orchards. With the demolition of the medieval city walls and the arrival of "modernity" these
lands were cleared.
One day, some peasants who used to visit this area in search of snails to eat, found a sack of gold coins. This finding prompted them to construct this building…. And as
a thank you to the snails, who are the ones who are going to guide them towards finding that fortune, they decided to fill the facade with them.
