The Freedom Market (Mercat de la Llibertad in Catalįn) is located in the Grącia Quarter and is one of the oldest markets in Barcelona and since 1888 occupies the space of the old Plaza de la Constitución which was where farmers sold their vegetables and damaged.
Between 1858 and 1888, the city council of barcelona will boost the coverage of a large part of the city’s markets, which until then were simple open spaces.
This initiative, aimed at protecting people from the elements of the weather and at the same time, giving an architectural impulse.
The construction of this market was in charge of Francesc Berenguer i Mestres, a regular collaborator of Antoni Gaudķ, but as hi did not have an
architect’s degree, all his works were always signed by some other architect. In this case was the architect Pasqual Tintorer who signed the project. In 2009 through an extension
the building was renovated and therefore has a modern architecture consisting of wrought iron and ceramic tiles.
The Freedom Market offers a variety of products such as meat, sins, fruits, vegetables, plants and even products for the home and clothing.
Immersing yourself in the markets of Grącia is a recommendable experience.
