In 1895 the Grącia Quarter had 50,000 inhabitants and the Freedom Market. But the city was growing rapidly and the construction of another market was necessary. This is how the Mercat de l’Abacerķa (Grocery Market in English) was born.
This market, born like all markets in Barcelona: outdoors. In this case, was in the
Revolution Square where the farmers sold their products. Later the
industrial Puig Martķ decides to cover the market and it is inaugurated in 1892 under the name of Santa Isabel Market. Years later it is reconstructed and it is renamed as
Mercat de l’Abacerķa (as reference of the food trade of Grącia).
The Grocery Market is one of the most visited places in the neighborhood. Its fresh products, prices and its long history make this market a symbol of the hardworking and industrious Grącia.
Like most of Barcelona’s markets, the Grocery has a metal structure and a brick-and-mortar closure; It is formed by three ships. Of the building they emphasize their roofs slightly
curved. Currently the market is in the process of remodeling that will prepare it to face new challenges.
Thanks to Mercč Rodoreda and her novel “La Plaēa del Diamant“, this market has been immortalized! Natalia, the main character of the novel and
symbol of working and humble women was going to buy at the Grocery Market.
